Zella Puffer Jacket | Lightweight Insulated Outerwear
We designed our Zella puffer jacket for women who refuse to choose between warmth and mobility. The recycled synthetic insulation delivers cozy protection without the bulk, while our signature stretch panels at the shoulders and sides move with you through every workout, commute, and weekend adventure.
The water-resistant ripstop shell sheds light rain and snow, and the entire jacket packs into its own internal pocket for easy storage in your gym bag or carry-on. We added thumbholes to the inner cuffs, a two-way zipper for ventilation control, and a fleece-lined chin guard that never chafes during high-output activities.
Insulation & construction details

Insulation Technology & Temperature Range
We fill our Zella puffer jacket with 100% recycled synthetic insulation that mimics down’s warmth-to-weight ratio without the allergens or moisture sensitivity. The lofted fibers trap body heat in air pockets while releasing excess moisture vapor, keeping you comfortable in temperatures ranging from 25°F to 50°F depending on your activity level and base layers.
The insulation distribution is strategically mapped—denser at the core and lighter at the sleeves—so you stay warm where it matters most without overheating during movement. Unlike traditional puffers that lose loft when compressed, our synthetic fill springs back to full thickness within seconds of unpacking, maintaining consistent warmth even after dozens of stuff cycles.

Fabric & Weather Protection
The outer shell uses a lightweight ripstop weave treated with a durable water repellent finish that causes water to bead and roll off the surface. We chose ripstop specifically because the reinforced grid structure prevents tears from spreading if you snag the fabric on a branch or equipment edge.
While this jacket handles light precipitation and snow flurries with ease, it’s not a rain jacket replacement for sustained downpours. The DWR coating maintains its effectiveness through approximately 20 wash cycles before requiring reapplication with a spray-on treatment. Pair it with one of our Zella vests for extra core warmth on particularly cold days, or wear it as a mid-layer under a hard-shell when conditions turn wet.
Fit & Sizing Guidance
Athletic Cut with Room for Layering
We cut this puffer with a slightly relaxed fit through the body to accommodate base layers and mid-weight sweaters underneath without restricting movement. The stretch panels at the sides and shoulders follow your natural range of motion whether you’re reaching overhead, carrying grocery bags, or securing a toddler in a car seat.
Most customers find their usual Zella size works perfectly. If you prefer a more tailored look or plan to wear it primarily over thin tops, consider sizing down. For maximum layering room or a longer torso length, size up. The adjustable hem drawcord lets you customize the fit at the waist, and the two-way zipper gives you ventilation options when you’re generating heat.

Zella Puffer Jacket Questions
Our Zella puffer jacket provides comfortable warmth in temperatures ranging from 25°F to 50°F depending on your activity level and what you layer underneath. For typical winter days with moderate activity—walking, errands, commuting—it works beautifully as an outer layer over a base layer or sweater.
For extreme cold below 20°F or prolonged outdoor exposure in frigid conditions, we recommend layering it under a windproof shell or choosing our longer puffer coat style for extended coverage. The synthetic insulation continues to insulate even if it gets damp, making it reliable in mixed winter weather.
The DWR (durable water repellent) coating naturally diminishes with repeated washing and wear, typically remaining effective through 15-20 wash cycles. When you notice water soaking into the fabric rather than beading on the surface, it’s time to reapply.
Wash the jacket according to care instructions, then while it’s still slightly damp, spray it evenly with a wash-in or spray-on DWR treatment designed for technical outerwear. Tumble dry on low heat for 20 minutes to heat-activate the treatment. The jacket should bead water immediately after this process.
Yes, the stretch panels and moisture-wicking properties make this jacket suitable for moderate-intensity activities like jogging, brisk walking, or cycling in cold weather. The two-way zipper lets you vent from the bottom for temperature regulation, and the thumbholes keep sleeves in place during arm movement.
For very high-intensity interval workouts or hot yoga, you’ll likely find it too warm. But for outdoor winter runs in the 25-40°F range, it performs exceptionally well. The fabric breathes enough to release heat without letting cold air penetrate.
Your Zella puffer jacket arrives with care instruction tags attached and comes in recyclable packaging. The jacket itself includes all features described—internal stuff pocket, thumbhole cuffs, adjustable hem, and fleece chin guard—with no assembly or additional components required.
We include a small card with packing instructions that shows the fastest way to compress the jacket into its internal pocket. No separate storage bag is needed since the jacket packs into itself.
This puffer runs true to our standard Zella sizing across the women’s jackets collection. If you own other Zella outerwear pieces, order your usual size. The fit is slightly more relaxed than our fitted athletic jackets to allow room for layering base layers and sweaters underneath.
The stretch side panels accommodate a range of body shapes comfortably. For reference, the size Medium measures 26 inches from shoulder to hem and fits chest measurements of 36-38 inches with moderate layering room.
We use 100% synthetic insulation made from recycled polyester fibers—no down, feathers, or other animal-derived materials. This makes the jacket suitable for vegan lifestyles and eliminates concerns about down allergies or ethical sourcing questions.
The synthetic fill also performs better than down in damp conditions, maintaining its insulating properties even when wet. It’s more affordable than comparable down jackets while delivering similar warmth-to-weight performance.
You can safely machine dry the Zella puffer jacket on low heat, which actually helps restore the insulation’s loft after washing. We recommend tossing in two clean tennis balls or dryer balls during the cycle—they bounce around and break up any clumps in the insulation, fluffing it back to its original thickness.
The jacket typically dries completely within 60-90 minutes on low heat. If you prefer air drying, hang it in a well-ventilated area and give it an occasional shake to redistribute the insulation. Either method works perfectly.
